FG defends $9.3m cash seized in SA, releases data on transaction

Nigerian Government has defended the controversial $9.3million seized from a private jet by South African immigration on September 5th. In a diplomatic discussion it opened with the South African government yesterday September 16th, FG said they are aware of the deal (money was meant to procure arms) and have presented documents on the transaction process to the South African govt as proof that the entire operation involving the seized aircraft belonging to CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, was genuine. Continue...

A source who spoke with Vanguard confirmed the on-going discussion between the two governments and said the seized aircraft has been released by the South African government. The source added that the money was seized following failure by Nigerian delegates to declare the money at South African airport
"Nigeria and South Africa are getting closer to diplomatic resolution of the row over the $9.3m transaction. The two nations have opened discussions. The Federal Government has submitted relevant data and documents on the transaction to South Africa and insisted that the transaction was legitimate. It also clarified that the funds were neither laundered nor smuggled for any covert manoeuvres. No launderer will be audacious to fly into a country in a chartered jet with such huge cash. The technical details on security matters, which necessitated the deal had been availed South Africa for screening. Based on initial scrutiny of the documents, the Challenger Jet has been released pending conclusion of a full-scale investigation by South Africa. There was procedural error at the airport, the team did not declare the $9.3million contrary to the aviation and Customs laws of South Africa. So, there was an oversight on the part of the delegation that went to complete the transaction. Nigeria is trying to complete the formality and we are confident that the cash will be released for the purpose it was meant for. Movement of cash for strategic purchase of security equipment by intelligence services is not new; it is a global trend. The FBI, KGB, MOSSAD and others do it.” the source said

Jonathan's hands are so deep in crime that most Nigerians cannot believe the man they call President is in fact a criminal. Did Jonathhan not show up in Chad with a known BH sponsor (Ali Modu Sheriff)? Who is the South-west PDP Chairman----Baruju, a wanted drug kingpin? Who is the main PDP Chairman----Adamu Muazu, a man with a N19 billion EFCC case? Who did Jonathan support to be the Governor of Ekiti---Fayose, a man with two EFCC cases? Did Jonathan send his plane to Benin Republic to go and rescue Dokubo from his 48-hour detention in Benin Republic? Where is the $20 billion that is unaccounted for? Who supports the Minister of Petroleum who used N10 billion for private jets in 2 years? All these crimes all linked to Jonathan and yet Jonathan is smart enough never to be caught red-handed. Is he too smart for Nigerians? Will the ICC at the Hague try Jonathan for crimes against humanity involving the acts of the Nigerian Army in extra-judicial killings in the NE?

I think there is more to this issue that the Nigerian government or some certain individuals in power are not revealing, because if its a legitimate purchase of arm, and its not black market purchase, why can't there be a bank transfer? Why does it have to involve such huge amount in cash in a cashlight society and a civilised world? Why wasn't the authorities in SA informed before such huge amount of money arrived their shores? So many unanswered question.

It's been said that insurgency can not last if the goverment does not know about it. Which country carry cash to buy weapons in this jet age. My conclusion, Federal Government knows so much about how illegal weapons are being smuggled to this country.I dont understand this excuse, carrying cash to buy arms in a private chatered plane without necessary documentations on behalf of FG and it took FG how many days to cook up story. I know a lot of people are not happy with this country being one, but please stop wasting innocent souls.

Why in the first instance should the purchase be done by any other department that's not military, air force, navy or police?
Why do we have heads of all the aforementioned as well as defence ministers if they won't be the ones handling such transactions?
Why is it on a privately owned jet when the Nigerian government have so many jets?
Why wasn't an instrument or money transfer channels used in place of cash?
These will be swept under the carpet as usual but the truth is the truth about whoever authorized this has been caught with their hands in the jar.but as usual my fellow Nigerians will blame it on every other thing and say its the opposition parties.
These government is clearly irresponsible.

Ayo Oritsejafor should right away be vacating his post as President of CAN. Being caught up in a situation like this seriously hurts his credibility and compromises the trust reposed in him to speak truth at all times to President Jo. When a supposedly ordained peacemaker finds himself aiding the cause of acquiring the instruments of violence, his position becomes utterly untenable.

Something is not just right about this transaction. In this 21st Century, it is old fashion to be moving physical cash for transaction of legitimate business. Except it is shady and illegitimate. This episode will certainly rubbish the image of the Government in the long run. The CAN President should concentrate more on spiritual affairs in line with his calling and stay away from politics. He is seen more as a politician and a business. Bishop Idahosa, his mentor, should be turning in his grave, disappointed..

Anonymous said...

I dont understand this explanations, refering to FBI and KGD etc do not matter to me, because i am quite sure even they do such, it will be definitely be one of there own and not American civilians. One thing that bothers me is, why the CAN aircraft? does it me that SA do not have good banking system to warrant transfer? why did FG not explain to SA earlier, abi our presidents dey quarrel? infact Nigeria is getting worse. to me this is the worst government ever in our history

Despite the number of jets in the Presidential fleet and other commercial jets out there, it is only that of CAN President that is worthy of this deal? FG is only legalizing this crime. If it were to be Buhari or any opposition, the likes of Okupe and Abati would have been ranting. How come Adeboye or Oyedepo's jets could nit be used for this purpose. CAN President is an accomplice in this matter. How I wish Nigeria is a sane country. I know this story will fade. A country that cannot account for 20million dollars. When did South Africa become Ukraine, Germany or US that arms are manufactured in large quatity. This country is just upside down

It is time for any right thinking and sincere Nigerians to believe that our leaders irrespective of their religion, political and ethnic affiliation are the problems of this country and they should be dealt with. Federal govt was recently accused of not remitting $20 billion and was crying foul, CAN was accused of having knowledge about BH, it is denying it. So what do we call this, CAN president and arms deal where is the connection. Let all nigerians go on street and hold FG responsible if truly this is democracy....

I understand why we Nigerians are jaded but we don't have to throw away all objectivity.

Before I present some points that we ought to consider, let me state clearly that I am not condoning the approach nor am I saying Jonathan or his administration are clean - I neither have concrete evidence to confirm or refute such an assertion. However, assuming that Jonathan were clea and all this is above board, here are some points that an objective audience should consider.

If, as some recent reports suggest, there are high ranking members of the political class, military and central bank are the driving force behind the BH debaucle, what means is available to the government to equip the military without BH and their sponsors knowing? Using a covert operation through private procurement may be the only way. Well, it is no longer covert but it may have been a good play assuming Jonathan is clean of course.

Why is everyone shouting that a CAN plane is in use? Yes, the plane may be owned by a company on which the head of CAN has a stake (or controlling interest) but the plane was said to have been leased by someone else. When companies like BA lease planes to fly their route to Naija, I don't see anyone shouting when contraband is brought into the country by such planes that the company that leased the planes to BA is responsible. Not an adequate analogy but, as it will be clearly ridiculous to accuse the leasing company and not the lessee, the same should hold true in this case.

Again, this is assuming that Jonathan is clean. It is a possibility we never consider as a nation but, there is a chance however small, that these are the acts of a clean, desperate but naive leader.

Let's here the responses of the objective.
